xAI is Musk's AI company, founded in March 2023 with a stated mission "to understand the true nature of the universe" — a deliberately broad goal that puts it at the frontier of AI research rather than boxing it into one narrow product category.

Grok

xAI's main product is Grok, an AI assistant with a real difference from most competitors: direct, near-live access to what's happening on X. Where a lot of AI models work off a fixed training cutoff, Grok can pull in current events as they happen, which changes what it's actually useful for day to day.

Now part of SpaceX

The corporate structure here moved fast. In March 2025, xAI acquired X (formerly Twitter) in an all-stock deal valuing it at $33 billion — folding the social platform and the AI company under one roof. Then in February 2026, SpaceX acquired xAI outright, making the combined entity one of the most valuable private companies in the world. So today: SpaceX owns xAI, xAI owns X, and Grok sits at the center of both.
