He rents a $50,000 tiny house — from his own company
Despite being one of the richest people on the planet, Musk's actual home for years has reportedly been a roughly 400-square-foot foldable prefab called a Boxabl "Casita," parked near SpaceX's Starbase site in Boca Chica, Texas. In 2021 he put it plainly on X: "My primary home is literally a ~$50k house in Boca Chica/Starbase that I rent from SpaceX."
Worth being precise about what this is and isn't: Musk didn't build a tiny-house company — he's a tenant. Boxabl is a completely independent startup with no ownership stake from Musk or SpaceX; SpaceX simply bought the unit and leases it to him. (Boxabl has since gone public on its own, via a $3.5 billion SPAC merger in July 2026 — unrelated to Musk.) Separately, SpaceX does maintain its own housing for Starbase employees — 52 duplexes plus 58 converted RV-park lots — though that's not confirmed to be Boxabl-brand, and it covers only a small slice of SpaceX's roughly 13,100 employees. Two real but distinct stories, often blended into one in retellings.
