Terafab

Terafab isn't a single company's project — it's a joint venture between Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, announced in 2026, to build a semiconductor fabrication plant near Houston (Grimes County, Texas) big enough to become the largest building in the world by floor area.

100M+Sq. Ft.
$16.8BInitial Phase
$119BFull Buildout Ceiling

$16.8 billion gets the first phase built. Filings show the total investment could scale all the way up to $119 billion if Terafab is built out in full — with the goal of producing roughly one terawatt of AI compute per year once complete. It's expected to employ 3,000+ people, and Tesla and SpaceX have reportedly committed to building on Intel's 14A manufacturing process.

One roof, every step

The idea is to consolidate every stage of chip production in one facility — design, fabrication, memory production, and packaging — instead of scattering it across separate suppliers and countries the way most of the chip industry works today. At over 100 million square feet, it would surpass the current largest building in the world (AvtoVAZ's ~65 million-square-foot main assembly plant in Russia).

Why three companies, one fab

The reason comes down to simple math: there aren't enough outside chip makers in the world to supply everything Musk wants to build. The main drivers are Tesla's Optimus robots and self-driving Cybercabs — both need chip volumes at a scale existing fabs, already stretched thin supplying the rest of the industry, can't guarantee on his timeline. SpaceX benefits too (its planned data centers in space need the same kind of custom silicon), and xAI needs chips to train and run Grok — but Optimus and Cybercab are the ones actually forcing the issue. Building it in-house isn't about cutting anyone out; it's about not being stuck waiting in line for a resource that's already scarce.

It's the same "solve it once, reuse it everywhere" instinct behind things like Liner Truck 3 reusing Tesla parts underground — just applied to the one input every one of these companies is competing for.

Look at it next to how everything else connects and Terafab starts to look less like a side project and more like clearing a hurdle: chips are the one thing standing between where these companies are today and the much bigger vision — robots, self-driving fleets, Mars — that all of it is actually building toward.
